Unicef - Emergencies

When natural disasters like earthquakes, tsunamis or floods happen, children are affected in many ways. If roads and buildings like hospitals and markets are damaged, children can’t get to school, visit a doctor or get the food they need to be healthy.

Emergencies caused by people, like war, also threaten children’s safety and make it hard to continue life as usual. Some children even get separated from their parents during emergencies, leaving them alone during a scary time.

Keeping life as normal as possible is an important way to help children feel happy again after they have experienced a natural disaster or a war. UNICEF works hard to help children affected by emergencies find their parents and have everything they need, like food, medicine, shelter and a place to learn and play.

Right now, UNICEF is helping children in Darfur, a place in an African country called Sudan, where fighting between different groups is making life very hard for everyone. Food, medicine, shelter, education and protection from the violence around them are some of the important things UNICEF is giving children in Darfur.

UNICEF is also helping children in the Democratic Republic of Congo, another place where fighting between different groups in the country is making life very hard for children.
